SACRAMENTO — Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, announced its endorsement Wednesday of California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, who is running for re-election this year.

“Treasurer Fiona Ma has a long-standing history of supporting and advocating for our LGBTQ+ community — as an advocate, a San Francisco Supervisor, in the California Legislature and now as our state’s top banking, finance and investment officer,” said Equality California Executive Director Tony Hoang. “She stood in support of marriage equality and LGBTQ+ civil rights before it was politically popular and helped lead the fight to protect LGBTQ+ youth from so-called ‘conversion therapy.’ We are proud to stand behind her as she seeks re-election and continues to improve the lives of all Californians.”

In 2020, during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Treasurer Ma’s office increased bond money available to build an additional 4,054 units of affordable housing, which included the first housing project to target LGBTQ+ elders in the Davis region. In addition, she assembled resources for taxpayer relief, food sources for needy families, and financial resources for small businesses.

“California must continue its investments in LGBTQ equality, and as Treasurer I am committed to working alongside Equality California,” said Treasurer Fiona Ma. “I have long worked to advance LGBTQ visibility in the AAPI communities and am honored by this endorsement.”
