SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— California Speaker pro Tempore Fiona Ma is urging parents to put together child identification kits to assist law enforcement in the event of an abduction.
“May is Child Safety Awareness Month. Many parents are unable to immediately provide law enforcement with their child’s crucial information, including fingerprints and DNA samples,” Ma said.
The father of Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped from her home at the age of 14 in 2002 then found alive nine months later, appeared with Ma in Sacramento.
Ed Smart said he was scrambling when his daughter was abducted, but now he encourages other parents to get a kit together now.
“Parents need to realize that this isn’t something that they can take for granted. They have to be prepared,” he said.
The $10 kits are available for purchase at childidprogram.com. There are 100,000 missing children cases in California alone.
