My heart is heavy. I owe my political career to my former boss and mentor, John L. Burton. He took a chance on me back in 1995, hiring me in his San Francisco District Office as his “Chinese” representative—even though I didn’t grow up in California, knew little about politics, and barely spoke Chinese at the time.

From John, I learned three invaluable lessons:

  1. “Darlin’…remember who brought you to the dance.”
  2. Always be a voice for those who don’t have one.
  3. Stand up for what’s right, even if you’re the only one standing.

California has so much to be thankful for because of John Burton. His impact and legacy will live on, even as we mourn his passing. He will be deeply missed.
