Why I'm Running
Proven. Principled. Problem Solver.
Proven. Principled. Problem Solver.
I’m Fiona Ma.
I am running to be your next lieutenant governor because I believe in the California dream.
I believe we have the power to have a state government that works for all of us.
And I believe that with more than two decades of proven, problem-solving experience, I can provide the leadership necessary to make California affordable again while maintaining our commitment to freedom, a healthy climate and quality education.
My Background
I am the oldest child of immigrant parents. They came to the U.S. seeking opportunity; my parents worked hard, saved money, and bought a home in a town with good schools. We moved to San Francisco in 1985, excited about our state’s diversity and entrepreneurial spirit, which propelled us closer to our dreams. Thanks to their focus on savings and belief that education is the foundation for success, I was able to earn a bachelor’s degree, a Masters degree, and a Masters in Business Administration without the burden of massive student debt.
After college, I worked my way up the ladder the old fashioned way: through hard work. I was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the California Assembly, and the State Board of Equalization before taking office as State Treasurer.
In these positions, I have maintained a record of accomplishing big things for Californians while taking on special interests. My problem-solving legislation ending human trafficking in massage parlors, gave survivors of domestic abuse more rights in the courtroom, and banned toxic chemicals in baby products all were signed into state law, as were nearly 60 other proposals.
Making Government Work for Us
From my public service in state government, and my background in accounting, I know the state budget inside and out, and how to get the most value for your tax dollars. My experience in financial oversight and budgeting gives me a unique perspective on how to put these resources to work to make California a better place for you and your family – while holding our government accountable.
Now, as your State Treasurer, I oversee the disbursement of $3.7 trillion dollars per year and manage an investment portfolio $150-$250 billion per year. As the state’s chief banker, I generate $18 million per day from our investments. Despite reeling from COVID, a stalled economy, and inflation, California continues to achieve top scores from bond rating agencies under my leadership and is nationally recognized for its financial management.
As Treasurer, I also serve on the Board of Directors of CalPERS and CalSTRS, the nation’s largest pension funds, where I have been an activist for socially responsible and climate-smart investing. I also have been laser focused on ensuring our state employees get the retirement security they have earned.
Fighting for Our Future
As your Lt. Governor, I’ll continue to fight to grow our economy, attract investment, and create high-quality jobs. I’ll work to make college more affordable and ensure seniors can age with dignity.
Having lived with a pre-existing condition and seen my mother struggle with depression, I will continue the fight for healthcare access for everyone. And as the spouse of a firefighter, I will champion our first responders and public safety personnel so we can feel safe in our homes, work and walking on our streets. And as a real estate tax accountant, I am committed to build more housing so everyone can afford to live in our great state.
I love California. I want to keep it The Golden State for ALL of us. I look forward to hearing your ideas and earning your vote.
In peace and friendship,
Fiona Ma, CPA
